Many claim that the origins of the history of recreational vehicles can be traced back to 1910, although arguably, the culture of “RV living”, began much earlier, during the days of travelling gypsies, performing acts and early white settlement where covered caravans were prominently used to move around. It became evident during these years, that the needs of “life in transit”, needed to be accommodated by bigger, more inclusive vehicles.

The first versions of these motor-homes included the basic living essentials like a kitchen, sleeping area and small dining area. Travellers could therefore enjoy the comfort of home cooking while moving from location to location. These structures were simply built on car or truck bodies.

Very soon after the first RV was introduced, camping clubs and societies formed around this type of lifestyle. During these years, unpaved roads and poorly developed infrastructure proved challenging to, “life in transit”, but this did not deter groups of campers from urging onwards.

The 1920s brought the mass production of these motor-homes and presented a wider range of families with the opportunity to travel and enjoy sightseeing at cheaper rates. Those who owned them and lived in them on a full-time basis became known as, “full-timers”, a subculture which still flourishes today.

An associated lifestyle began to develop amongst these groups, which included not only those on vacation but those who found innovative ways to work at the various campgrounds, and travel from location to location. In its formative years, this culture seemed somewhat isolated from the rest of society and very distinct from town living. This was because there was no telephone access, or internet coverage, and no luxury facilities like air conditioning and on-board ablution facilities.

Today, living and travelling in an RV has been simplified and accommodated into “normal living”, by the inclusion of various comforts and access to mobile internet and other communication mediums which are widely available and accessible. Some high-end versions even include cable television, on-board entertainment systems, Jacuzzis and spa facilities.

The history of recreational vehicles illustrates that this kind of lifestyle was birthed from a love for the outdoors and travelling, although today, luxury travellers use these motor-homes to accommodate their busy lifestyles. For over 100 years, this subculture has thrived, from the Unites States to countries all over the world.
