The Economy And RVs And Fifth Wheels

When a recession hits, buying stops. This generally means that unnecessary purchases such as RVs, Fifth Wheels, boats and ATVs stop. People focus on more important commodities such as food. Attendance at movie theaters tends to rise during recessions as people seek an escape from daily life. Real life vacations and explorations get put on hold.

This January when RV shows started reporting an increased number of attendance and sales, many took it as a sign of economic recovery. Many in the industry waited with their breath held to see if the trend would continue. And it did. Confidence started to return. The worst of the crash appeared to be over. Class A RV dealers were reporting an increased number of sales, as did Fifth Wheel dealers and towable dealers.

The beginning of the year generally shows an upswing in sales, peaking around July, then sales steadily drop towards the end of the year. If only the RV industry could see sales stay somewhat strong throughout these months it would be further reassurance that the worst of the recession had passed.

July came and went and a normal decline happened, keeping sales numbers above 2009. August saw the same, then September. In July, towables showed a marked increase in sales over 2009 by 1.7%. Class B Motorhomes sold 14.6% more than the previous year and travel trailers were up by 7.8 percent, according to Statistical Surveys, Inc.

The Hershey Show in Pennsylvania, by some considered to be one of the largest shows in the US, unveiled new RV models and Fifth wheels to an eager audience. Some dealers felt it was the most financially successful show they had encountered at this arena. Both high end Class A RVs and Fifth Wheels were selling well.

As reported by RV analyst Dr. Richard Curtain, sales are expected to slow from now through the end of the year, but RV dealers have a reason to stay positive. As of the end of July, wholesale shipments reached 155,800 for the year, which was an increase of 81% over the same time frame in 2009.

So what’s in store for RVs and Fifth Wheels? More sales. As the word gets out about the fun and adventure that can be had in an RV or fifth wheel, more and more people want one. It’s no surprise the RV industry made it through the recession and is still hanging in there.

RVs and Fifth Wheels are being watched as a continued indictor of the health of the economy. If all continues as predicted, then the worst of the recession appears to be in the past. Buyers beware, the new models RVs and Fifth Wheels have even more amenities than in the past, some utilize green technology and some cater to the affluent, but there is an RV out there to fit any lifestyle.
