Every car owner dreads the day they’re going to need work under the hood of their vehicle. It’s a pretty universal worry. It’s a nightmare to think of a fuel pump, head gasket or alternator going south, not to mention that all of these parts are costly to repair.
But people don’t always think about the need to replace their tires; even though tires have the greatest impact on your vehicle’s safety level. Worn treads can easily contribute to traffic accidents, particularly in poor driving conditions.
I will give you some simple hints in this article that will help you to be sure your tires are reliable and will also extend their life. It just takes a little time and effort once in a while to follow these hints. A few minutes spent regularly in checking your tires will help ensure the safety of you and any other riders in your car.
Tip 1 – Proper Pressure is Important
Lack of tire pressure is the leading cause of tire failure and can lead to accidents. Most drivers don’t know that some pressure will seep between the grooves in the tire rubber on a car’s wheels. Even over several weeks this loss of pressure is more or less imperceptible. After a few months, however, the loss of pressure will begin to become a significant issue.
Under inflated tires make your car slower to respond on steering as well as reducing your fuel efficiency. The reduced pressure can also create a safety hazard as the treads may begin to separate.
You should check the pressure in the tires every month. When it gets low, add enough air to get the pressure back to the tire’s recommended psi.
Tip 2 – Make Sure The Car is Aligned
Problems with your car’s alignment can lead to an increase of tread wear in a very short amount of time. An alignment problem has an effect on the angle your wheels can lean and turn. When a caster, toe or camber are not aligned properly you’ll be able to feel your car pulling to the left or right while you’re driving straight. If your vehicle is front-wheel drive then your front tires will see the most wear and tear.
People tend to ignore their tires until the treads are so worn that they must be replaced because failure could happen at any moment. But these suggestions will help you prevent that. You car will be safer for taking the time to do these things. In addition to increasing your car’s safety, you will also enjoy improved responsiveness and you will even save some money on gas.
