Cooking meals that the whole family enjoys can be a challenge at the best of times. When you are trying to do this in a caravan with limited facilities and space this task can seem daunting, but with planning, it is actually quite easy.
Do not try to cook anything too complicated in your caravan. Cooking a full Sunday roast in a half-sized oven is possible, but it is hard work and never tastes as good as when you cook it at home.
Luckily, these days most caravans come fitted with a microwave and a freezer that is big enough to accommodate some pre-cooked meals. Remember to turn the freezer on in advance so that the meals will not defrost whilst you are travelling. If you do not have time to cook in advance, take a few frozen ready-meals with you instead.
If you must cook in your caravan during the summer bear in mind that the caravan will warm up within minutes and become unbearably hot, so choose meals that are quick to cook. In the winter, do not worry so much you will be glad of the extra heat.
In the winter, concentrate your meals on one or two pot recipes such as stews, curry, chilli, soup, corned beef hash or casseroles. Those kinds of meals are homely, warming, substantial and just right to eat after an active day in bracing weather.
Invest in a simple barbecue to use during the summer months. You can easily cook a wide variety of meals that way, simply by adding boiled potatoes, cold pasta or rice and a salad or some coleslaw.
Condiments take up a lot of space, so invest in some small jars to decant your family’s favourite condiments into; after all, you are rarely away for more than 2 weeks so a small jar is usually enough. Take tinned or dry food with you, because fridge space is at a premium. Tinned vegetables, fruit, fish and corned beef are as nutritious as the fresh products, but can be stored in little nooks and crannies. Buy the majority of your drinks when you arrive on site to avoid overloading your caravan.
