I must confess I do have a penchant for Herefordshire cider, strong, full bodied and strong – it is worth stating that twice – as it can pack a bit of a punch, so some discretion is urged, especially for those used to a medium lager.

So that’s the sensible warning over with, now we can sit down and get the perfect pint.

There are loads of reasons to visit Herefordshire, some of them very good indeed, but to experience the locally produced tipple has to be my main aim.

There is much more to Herefordshire, when not in the pub you could go on a tour of some of the prettiest villages in the country. The so called Black and White trail takes in many of the black beam and white washed houses that draw so many to this sparsely populated region of England.

There are antique shops, markets, tea room and did I mention the cider?

The biggest cider manufacturer in the world is based in Hereford, Bulmers, and you will find it’s most popular brands in most local pubs, these include Woodpecker, Strongbow and Scrumpy Jack.

Bulmers is now owned by Heineken UK, but there are a plethora of smaller manufacturers you will only be able to find within a small radius of the centre of production, it is well worth asking a barman to see what he has from his local maker. You will be thankful that you did.

For the true cider hunter you will find yourself travelling around a bit, but remaining within a couple of miles of your base, so consider taking a motorhome tour, there are campsites in abundance and it means you can take in as much of the local culture as possible.
