It is getting more and more expensive to enjoy your RV. RV repair is one of those big expenses. It usually costs at least an hour in shop time for any minor thing. At about one hundred dollars an hour, that is a big expense. Gas costs are rising to the point that it is almost impossible to enjoy your hobby. But, saving on repairs can be one way to be able to continue.

You might complain, legitimately enough, that you have no clue about how to start. But, don’t give up so easily. There are ways to learn. One way is through continuing education courses at many area colleges. Even if you only learn the very basics such as changing oil, plugs, or doing very minor repairs, you may still recognize quite a savings.

If you wish, a friend might be willing teach you the task in exchange for your doing something for them. Swaps, or bartering, is a way to save. You might do something for them that they don’t like doing, such as wash their RV, or clean the interior. Maybe there is something they want that does not even relate to the hobby. You might cook for them, or walk their dog or some similar chore. You won’t be out anything, or very little.

If there is a specific thing that needs fixing, you can sometimes go to the internet and get directions about how it is done. There are even manuals that can be downloaded a section at a time. You might even want to download the entire manual and have it handy when needed. Pictures and step by step instructions offered by some are almost like having someone standing be side guiding you through the process.

You might not want to undertake a major repair job. Even those with experience often pay someone else to do the major things, while doing the easier and quicker tasks. It is still a great savings. Anything done by a shop gets billed by the hour, and lots of shops have a one hour minimum billing. If you can do just one job that charges an hour, you can save as much as a hundred dollars. Think how much gas you cam buy with that.

There is always the threat of having to give up RVing because of fuel costs rising so rapidly. However, saving on shop costs can offset some of this big expense. It just might be the determining factor in whether or not you can continue going on trips. Minor jobs like changing the oil and doing minor tune ups are not hard, but can save a lot. This means more miles to enjoy.

If you dont’ wish to do any repairs yourself, you can still save. You can get a friend, or even a fellow RVer to do it for a lot less than a professional will charge. Shops have huge overhead costs, and have to charge accordingly. You might even be able to swap something for the service if you are dealing with a friend.

Doing your own RV repair, or at least bartering with others for it, can mean that you don’t have to give up on your dream of RVing. The money you save will mean you can spend more on gas, maybe meaning you won’t have to give up on it. Even with gas prices what they are, there is hope.
